A guide to playing the Dragon Quest VII Reimagined demo for beginners.

When it comes to legendary franchises that have been in the industry for over 39 years (turning 40 this year) and continue to release new titles, the Dragon Quest series is undoubtedly at the forefront. While there are only 11 mainline entries, the series has spawned countless spin-offs, expansions, and remakes. Among them is Dragon Quest VII, which, including the latest Dragon Quest VII Reimagined, has now been remade three times (on Mobile, 3DS, and Reimagined). After much anticipation, the demo for Dragon Quest VII Reimagined has finally been released. For those picking up this chapter for the first time and feeling a bit overwhelmed, we have prepared a beginner's guide to help you get started. If you're ready, let’s dive in!

Before diving into the details, for those interested in playing the Dragon Quest VII Reimagined demo, it is now available across all current platforms, including Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X. The demo allows you to play from the very beginning of the game until the conclusion of the first Stone Tablet fragment storyline. For newcomers to the series, please note that the protagonist in Dragon Quest games is nameless; you must name him yourself. The most popular name used by fans is Arus, which is the protagonist's name in the manga adaptation. Of course, you are free to use your own name as well

Once the game begins and the opening story sequence concludes (after seeing your father off for his fishing trip), your primary task is to visit every single house—and I mean every single one. You should break every pot, open every drawer, smash every barrel, and search every cupboard you find. This allows you to scavenge for items such as medicinal herbs, weapons, and armor. Even if some items are weaker than what you currently have, they can be sold at shops to fund your journey. The Dragon Quest series is notorious for its expensive equipment, often requiring players to grind for gold by fighting monsters; however, looting homes provides a great financial head start. Occasionally, you might even stumble upon powerful items like "seeds" that permanently increase your Agility, Strength, HP, or MP. So, don't forget to go out there and "borrow" everything you can find!

Next, when you enter a dungeon as part of the story, the first thing you should do is stock up on plenty of medicinal herbs, as you won't have access to healing spells in the early stages. Once the story allows you to enter a cave or a tower, go right in—there's no need to grind for levels on the world map just yet. Inside the dungeons, you'll find treasure chests, barrels, and crates to break, which often contain free weapons and armor. However, venturing deep into these dungeons can be difficult at first. You will need to travel back and forth between the dungeon and the village to rest at the inn and save up money to buy equipment for everyone. By repeating this process, you will gain gold, items, and levels simultaneously until you are strong enough to take on the area's boss.

Another thing you should learn is how to use various skills in combat. As you level up, you will sometimes gain new abilities, such as spells that increase defense, spells that boost attack power, and various other skills to help you in battle. However, don't use them too frequently because your MP (Magic Points) is limited. MP can only be restored by sleeping at an inn or setting up a tent on the world map (MP recovery items are scarce, so save them for emergencies). In reality, Dragon Quest VII Reimagined is relatively easy compared to the brutally difficult original PS1 version—anyone who played that one knows exactly what I mean.

Those are the basics you need to know for the Dragon Quest VII Reimagined demo. We hope this guide is helpful to newcomers. As for veterans of the series, there’s not much more to say since you already know the ropes. Besides what we’ve mentioned, another essential element of RPGs is talking to NPCs to gather information. Sometimes, speaking with your party members will also provide hints and directions when you're stuck. Give it a try—you might just become a fan of the series! The full version of Dragon Quest VII Reimagined is set to be released on February 6, 2026, so start saving up!
