The director of Resident Evil: Requiem revealed that they had to design Leon to look like a handsome older man.

Since Resident Evil Requiem was announced—introducing the new protagonist Grace Ashcroft and a gameplay shift toward pure stealth-horror—fan reactions have been divided. While many embraced the terrifying new direction, others were still riding the high-action wave of Resident Evil 4 Remake and felt hesitant about the return to slow-burn horror.

However, the tide turned when the long-rumored appearance of Leon S. Kennedy was finally confirmed. Appearing as a rugged, incredibly cool "middle-aged" version of himself, Leon’s new look instantly won over fans of all genders.

Director Koshi Nakanishi recently shared the design process behind this fan-favorite iteration of Leon:

"We spent a considerable amount of time refining Leon’s appearance to ensure he met the high standards of the female staff at Capcom."

"We spent a significant amount of time fine-tuning Leon’s look because so many Capcom employees are huge fans of his. The female staff, in particular, were incredibly strict during the design process. When reviewing his model, they would point out specific details and offer feedback on even the smallest features, such as the wrinkles on his neck and the fine lines on his face.

I once shared this story with a female fan, telling her how our female developers helped shape Leon’s look, and she responded, 'The women at Capcom really did an amazing job!' Throughout development, Leon underwent thorough and meticulous refinements. I believe we succeeded in creating a design that truly makes people's hearts race."

In addition to his physical appearance, Leon’s personality and character traits were carefully shaped by the collective vision of the development team. Director Koshi Nakanishi explained:

"Since each team member has their own unique understanding of Leon’s 30-year history, they would often tell me, 'If it were Leon, there’s no way he would do that in this situation.' In short, there were actually more opinions regarding his internal character than his outward appearance.

After countless discussions, we finally settled on a portrayal that everyone felt was 'just right.' I hope that when players see Leon in this installment, they too will find a version of him that resonates with their own personal interpretation."

Speaking of Leon’s personality, it’s hard not to chuckle at what we saw in the latest Resident Evil Requiem demo. In the scene where Leon meets Grace, our "handsome uncle" plays the mentor role by giving her a high-powered handgun for self-defense. The catch? It only has one single bullet. (Come on, Leon!)

Fans have been jokingly teasing him, saying things like, "If you’re not Ada , one bullet is all you get." The teasing didn't stop there—when a nurse was being devoured by a zombie right in front of him and Leon didn't lift a finger to help, the community doubled down with: "If she’s not Ada, Uncle Leon ain't helping!"

Perhaps 30 years of surviving bio-organic nightmares has finally turned him cold. We’ll have to wait and see just how much Leon has changed when the full game drops on February 27, 2026.
