When talking about important people in the gaming industry, we probably think of many famous game developers that we are familiar with, such as Mr. Hideo Kojima or Mr. Hideki Kamiya. But for older gamers, they might think of an old but experienced game developer who has been in the gaming industry for more than 40 years, which is Grandpa Horii Yuji, the creator of legendary RPG games from the past to the present, the Dragon Quest series. If we only count the main games of this series, there might be only 11 games, but if we look at the spin-offs, expansions, sub-series, special expansions, we will see that there are dozens of games in this series. Almost every famous Dragon Quest game comes from the idea or has involvement from Grandpa Horii. In a recent interview with Famitsu, Grandpa Horii told fans that he will be a game developer until he dies.
This story comes from an interview with Grandpa Horii, who is now 70 years old, but still comes to work healthy every day. Grandpa still works for Square Enix (formerly Enix). Grandpa said that he spent more than four decades as a game designer working with Enix. During the interview, Grandpa Horii brushed off the idea of retiring, saying that "he will be a game developer forever, and he intends to continue creating games for as long as he can." Grandpa's latest work is the Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, which is currently creating a buzz and is gaining widespread interest. Even people who have never played the series have turned to play it, with sales currently skyrocketing unexpectedly.
As for future works, what we know for sure now is the game Dragon Quest 12 The Flames of Fate, which has been in development since 2021. Grandpa talked about many changes that will happen to Dragon Quest 12, saying that this installment will improve the traditional fighting style, where people stand in front of the board and take turns attacking, and increase the tone of the story to be darker and more serious than before. Uncle couldn't say when the game will be released or when it will be available. In addition, there was talk of working with Mr. Sakaguchi Hironobu, the creator of the Final Fantasy series, who has collaborated to create an unnamed game in the project called Armor Project, which will be made for Square Enix in the future.
Up until now, we all are cheering for Grandpa Horii to stay healthy and continue to create for us for a long time because Japanese people tend to be workaholics. When they get old, they don’t know what to do, so companies in Japan still hire these old people to continue working (if they still want to continue working). Because don’t forget that these old people are the ones who lay the foundation for the company to be stable. It’s true that the saying goes, “Old people have bathed in hot water before others.” Sometimes, children should listen to adults (and adults should also listen to children’s perspectives). Because if it weren’t for these old people, we definitely wouldn’t have the great games we have today.
