In the middle of the month, if anyone follows anime news or reads news from our 4Gamers, they probably heard the news of the launch of a new mecha anime in the Mobile Suit Gundam universe, Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX. Many people have guessed that this Mobile Suit Gundam series might be a colony of Thailand because there is Thai language in it. Aside from having Thai language in the anime, another thing that many people are interested in is that the main character of this series is still a girl. Plus, the ages of the characters are getting younger and younger. So many people have begun to wonder why in almost every part of the Mobile Suit Gundam series (in some parts the main character is an adult) they have children piloting the mecha. Someone asked Mr. Tomino Yoshiyuki, the creator of the first Mobile Suit Gundam series, why they used a 16-year-old boy like Amuro Ray as the main character. Mr. Tomino said that he based this story on World War II.
This story came from the "Proposal for NEXT STAGE II" section of the Nippon Broadcasting System's Mantan Web radio program, where Mr. Tomino was invited to talk about the creation of the first Mobile Suit Gundam anime series in 1979. One of the things discussed during the radio program was the inspiration for creating the character Amuro Rei, the eternal protagonist of the Mobile Suit Gundam series to this day, and why he had to be a child. Mr. Tomino explained, "When the Pacific War ended, I was well aware of the existence of child soldiers. I also knew that when you were 16 years old, you could go to a training school to train for tanks. In the case of the Navy, there were child soldiers on the battleship Yamato in World War II."
Mr. Tomino also said that this inspired and drew attention to his creation of the anime. The point that Mr. Tomino thought about was, "There is a question of why I let your child join the war, but I want people to know that fact, so I firmly decided to put a boy named Amuro in Gundam," he explained. And if anyone remembers, in the first Mobile Suit Gundam series, we will see the spoiled and willful Amuro, who is still a child, but has to be pressured by the fire of war to join the battlefield, which reflects the idea that Mr. Tomino said very well. So it is not strange that in the following series, the main character is still a child, and this latest series still refers to this idea.
For those wondering who Amuro Ray is, he is actually an ordinary boy who is crazy about computers. One day, a war broke out. Amuro, who was running away, came across a transport robot on the way, so he piloted the robot to fight. His father was the one who created the RX-78-2 robot (the first one broke during testing). Since Amuro liked to sneak off to play with his father's computer, he knew this robot very well. So it's not surprising that he could pilot the robot as soon as he read the manual. From then on, he was the pilot of the RX-78-2 robot stationed on the battleship White Base, protecting civilians and people on the ship from the enemy's pursuit. Before Amuro was promoted to a soldier to join the war, children also fought in World War II. So the creators used this idea, along with the question, if you were a parent, would you let your child join the war? The answer is in this anime. Even though you don't want to, you have to do it because there is no other choice.
Another reason why Mr. Tomino chose a teenage protagonist in Mobile Suit Gundam was to attract a younger audience to watch this series. If anyone can remember, the Mobile Suit Gundam series at that time was very different from the mecha anime of that era. The Mobile Suit Gundam series focused more on the realism of piloting mechas and the brutality of war than the mecha anime of that era that focused on the fun fantasy, which is collectively called the Miracle Mecha series. Using a male character was also a good selling point, because from then on we have seen the main characters as children up until now.
