When talking about old fighting games that many people liked in the past, one of them must be the Marvel Vs. Capcom series. Because this game is considered the beginning of the legendary fun of the Vs. Capcom series that will follow in the future. After this, Capcom tried to experiment by taking Marvel heroes to fight in various games before bringing them to fight with Street Fighter. And when the game became popular, Capcom did not hesitate to bring characters from Capcom's games to adapt into a fighting game. But the problem was that Marvel in 1998 was quite confused and very protective of its own characters. It can be said that this one didn't give it to this one. Let's look back at this story to see which characters Capcom wanted to use in the game but couldn't. Let's see together.
This story comes from a YouTuber named SeventhForce who discovered an article by a Capcom Producer that was posted on Twitter a long time ago, which is like a complaint from a Marvel Vs. Capcom game developer when he made this game in 1998, written by Kenji Kataoka. It's full of many interesting details about choosing characters to put in the game Marvel Vs. Capcom. Before choosing a hero character to put in the game, Marvel kept nagging that many characters couldn't be included because of copyright issues since Marvel at that time had sold the rights to many characters to make movies.
On SeventhForce's X-Men, which has no markings on its name, it says, "It appears MvC1 will be called Marvel Super Heroes 2 internally. The first Marvel characters Capcom has offered are Captain America, Spider-Man, Hulk, Wolverine, Gambit, Psylocke, Thor, Dr. Doom, Juggernaut, Magneto, and Thanos." It also goes on to say, "They also have a list of Marvel characters that have been approved, including Beast, Deathlok, Iron Fist, Quasar, Namor, Sasquatch, Machine Man, Elektra, Speedball, Spider-Woman, and Medusa." There's also a list of possible villains, including "Fin Fang Foom, Super Skrull, Wizard, Ultron, Diablo, Scorpion, and Doc Ock."
One of the characters that couldn't be used was Iron Man, which Marvel didn't let Capcom use. But they let them use War Machine, a recolored Iron Man model, instead because of copyright issues. As for all the Fantastic Four characters, they weren't allowed to be used. The first set of characters that Capcom suggested they wanted in the game were Iron Man, Thor, Psylocke, Jubilee, Mr. Fantastic. In particular, Howard the Duck was the character that Capcom wanted the most, but Marvel couldn't allow it because it was likely due to copyright issues with Lucasfilm and Universal, since there were 2 movies made.
All of the above is understandable because of copyright issues, but what confused Capcom the most was when they decided to choose Galactus as the final boss in this game, but Capcom rejected it. Marvel gave the reason that Galactus was too powerful and not someone who could be defeated with fists (but isn't Galactus just a punching bag for the hero to beat?). Marvel suggested using Loki instead, but Capcom didn't think that Japanese players at the time would recognize this character and thought his green and yellow tights looked funny. So Marvel suggested another option, Fin Fang Foom, but Capcom didn't want it. If you look at the accompanying image, you can understand why Capcom didn't choose these two characters.
After a long negotiation, they finally agreed on 7 Marvel characters that could be used. As for the others, Marvel agreed to let them be additional characters but not the main characters in the fight. In Marvel Vs. Capcom 2, more characters were added, but many of them still could not be used. Unlike now, Marvel is more open and allows the use of various characters. We hope that in the future, Marvel Vs. Capcom 4 will have more characters. If anyone is interested, go find the MARVEL vs. CAPCOM Fighting Collection game to play because it is available on almost every device on the market. I can tell you that it is fun and worth the price.
