When talking about horror manga, many people think of the works of Junji Ito, the author of the legendary horror manga, Klang Sayong, whose stories are both uniquely terrifying and creepy. And one of his most iconic works, aside from the story of Tomie, the Beautiful Horror and the Deadly Fish, is the short story Uzumaki, another story that many people have praised for its uniqueness and horror, to the point that someone bought the rights to this manga to make it into an anime. And instead of making it like a normal anime, the team chose to keep the original line drawings and black and white images of Junji, making this anime unique, so much so that we had to review it for you to read. Let’s see how interesting the anime Uzumaki, the Deadly Spiral, is.
The story is about a small town in Japan through the story of Kirie, a high school student who lives in this town with her family. Ever since her boyfriend Shuichi invited Kirie to move to another place, the strangeness of this town gradually becomes stranger and more violent. Whether it's Shuichi's father who behaves strangely, Kirie's school friends who only come to school on rainy days until he slowly turns into a snail, or trees, grass, wind, or even water currents that spin in circles like a snail, through the story of Kirie's life, encountering strange events, each of which is strangely horrifying, in the style of Junji Ito that many people are familiar with.
The story will be told through the character of Kirie, who has to encounter strange things that happen to people close to her, whether it's her friends at school, her neighbors, or her boyfriend, all of which are related to snails. Each strange story will be strange and not very logical, such as someone turning into a snail, why don't people in the town seem shocked? Or strange things keep happening, why don't people in the town think of escaping from here? At first, you might be annoyed, but when you keep watching until the end, the story will tell us why the villagers are like that. The story answers almost everything we're wondering, but some things are left for us to figure out what it is. But believe me, the things that aren't revealed in this story are one of the good things about this anime, because if we knew what it was, the story might not be interesting.
The selling point of this anime, besides the story that Professor Junji created perfectly, is the line drawing, illustrations, sound, and everything that goes together so well that it feels like you're seeing the manga moving. And if you've ever watched a horror anime, you'll know that the anime itself isn't very good. But in the anime Uzumaki, the Death Spiral is based entirely on the professor's line drawing, to the point that sometimes you get goosebumps with the line drawing. The more you see the scary, creepy images moving, the easier it is for people who have read this manga to relate to it.
The story is not divided into episodes like Junji Ito's other long short stories, but rather tells the story of Kirie's daily life, going to school and encountering strange things, coming home and encountering strange things, and even going to the hospital and encountering strange things, all through Kirie, who is the protagonist. Until the last episode, the story changes from strangeness to survival, and reveals where the whole story started and what will happen next. People who have watched it all agree that it is one of the best endings of his work. Another thing that should be praised is the character movement, which looks quite good, different from the movement of other anime, which shows the attention given to this part by the creator, but may have missed some small details in the scene that should have been done by someone else (the person who drew the scenes and the person who animated the characters should have been different). We will talk about this in the next topic.
Let's talk about the disadvantages of this anime. As I said, this is a 100% adaptation of the manga, so it lacks color and looks strange. Those who have watched a lot of anime may not like it. Sometimes, the images look rushed and not detailed, with many times of incomplete drawing, especially in the second episode, which is very obvious. But that seems minor compared to the well-made character storytelling. Another disadvantage is the story, even though it looks good and well-rounded, but before we understand everything, we, the viewer, are a bit annoyed and wonder why it is like that, why the characters are like this. But when it is revealed, it doesn't tell us everything. Plus, the ending makes us think. But if you are a fan of the horror series and Junji Ito's writings, you definitely won't think that way.
Summary of the Uzumaki anime series, the spiral of death. If you are a fan of Junji Ito's manga, and like ghost stories, horror stories, you must not miss this 4-episode anime. At first, you may be annoyed by what the characters do. But when everything is revealed, you will no longer have doubts and accept everything that happens. Because everything just happens and goes in a spiral like this endlessly. That's what happens with this anime. As for the score, I would give it 7.2 out of 10. I deducted points for the rushed work and the annoying storyline in the beginning. The Japanese dubbing is okay. Everything is perfect. Try to find it and watch it. Who knows, you will become a fan of Junji's work?
