Analysts predict Cyberpunk 2 will be released in 2030 because the development team is currently rushing to complete The Witcher 4
When it comes to CD Projekt Red, many might not recognize the name at first. But mention them as the creators of Cyberpunk 2077, and it immediately rings a bell. Before their reputation took a hit with the rocky launch of Cyberpunk 2077, the studio was a beloved fan favorite thanks to the critically acclaimed The Witcher series, known for its engaging gameplay and masterful storytelling. This legacy built massive anticipation for Cyberpunk 2077, but when the game finally released, it felt unfinished, causing the studio’s reputation among gamers to decline sharply. Recently, the studio announced The Witcher 4, though fans remain hesitant about whether it will be polished on day one. Amidst this, analysts predict that Cyberpunk 2 won’t arrive until 2030 at the earliest, as the team is currently prioritizing the development of The Witcher 4. Let’s dive into the details.
This information comes from Mateusz Chrzanowski, an analyst at Noble Securities, who stated in an interview with the Polish media outlet Strefainwestorow that "despite Cyberpunk 2 being announced in 2022, they project a release date in the fourth quarter of 2030."
The news regarding the development of Cyberpunk 2 was previously confirmed by CD Projekt Red through job postings seeking staff to help develop multiplayer systems for Project Orion—the internal codename for the Cyberpunk 2 sequel. This led many to believe that the sequel will feature multiplayer elements, which is one reason why Noble Securities predicts the release date may be further off than expected; the entire team is currently believed to be mobilizing all resources to polish and complete The Witcher 4 first.
"Analysts speculate that the inclusion of an online mode in Cyberpunk 2 could delay its development by another half-decade or more. This is compounded by the studio's prioritization of The Witcher franchise; CD Projekt Red currently has its hands full with plans to release a paid DLC for The Witcher 3 in 2026 to build marketing momentum for The Witcher 4.
Furthermore, the studio is accelerating the development of The Witcher 4 to meet a projected 2027 release date. Analysts believe The Witcher 4 is likely entering its final stages of development, and only once it nears completion will the team fully pivot to Cyberpunk 2. Consequently, we may not see a trailer for Cyberpunk 2 for at least another three years, or potentially longer. Given that AAA titles typically require at least five years of development—plus additional time for online systems—it is no surprise that analysts are making such long-term predictions."
"In short, we will likely have a long wait ahead of us for Cyberpunk 2. Before it even arrives, we might have forgotten about it entirely, and will likely be anxiously anticipating whether The Witcher 4 launches in a complete state, unlike Cyberpunk 2077. This is because trust, once broken, is not easily regained; some players, after experiencing that massive disappointment, are now hesitant to buy any games from CD Projekt Red again. If there are any further updates, we will report them to you. Stay tuned."
