As the release date for Resident Evil Village approaches, fans are becoming increasingly eager for more story details. Various media outlets have been digging into developer interviews to provide us with the latest updates.
The latest buzz from international media focuses on the game's "horror element." Capcom previously mentioned that the stories of Grace and Leon would be split between horror and action. Recently, the development team revealed that while Grace’s segment will definitely be scary, it might not be as intensely suffocating as Resident Evil 7. However, it is expected to be more frightening than Resident Evil Village. As for Leon’s segment, although it leans more toward action, it will still retain a core sense of horror. Let’s dive into the details
This information stems from an interview on PlayStation Blog Japan with Koushi Nakanishi, the director of Resident Evil Requiem. Nakanishi stated, "Resident Evil Requiem may be scarier than Resident Evil Village, but Resident Evil 7 remains the most terrifying entry in the series."
When asked where Requiem stands in terms of horror, Nakanishi-san explained, "Some players found Resident Evil 7 difficult to finish due to its sheer intensity, which led us to tone down the horror slightly in Resident Evil Village. However, for Resident Evil Requiem, Capcom has found a 'middle ground' balance between the two." He further noted that the game features Leon Kennedy and Grace Ashcroft as dual protagonists, blending the gameplay styles of Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 4
Nakanishi-san further explained, “Leon’s segments focus on more intense action. Because of this, we were able to fully lean into the horror for Grace’s parts. That being said, Leon’s path still retains a sense of dread, though it feels more like a 'thrilling' experience rather than pure horror. This stands in contrast to Grace’s traditional survival-horror gameplay, which emphasizes character vulnerability and limited resources.”
He added, “Overall, this game may be scarier than Resident Evil Village, but it alternates between tension and relief. As a result, it won't be the kind of relentlessly suffocating experience found in Resident Evil 7.”
