I never said that: Resident Evil Requiem director claims he didn't lie about Leon in the game

Looking back at the initial reveal of Resident Evil Requiem, the first trailer introduced us to a new female protagonist named Grace Ashcroft. This installment promised a return to the series' survival horror roots, bringing players back to the aftermath of Raccoon City more than 20 years later."Amidst the excitement of that trailer, leaks and rumors began to circulate that a fan-favorite character—Leon S. Kennedy—would also be featured in the game. When the media reached out to Capcom for clarification, the responses suggested that Leon was not in the game, or at least heavily implied his absence. However, with the latest trailer officially confirming Leon's appearance, the Director of Resident Evil Requiem now insists that he never actually lied about Leon being in the game. Let's dive into the details."

This 'explanation'—or should we say 'excuse'—comes directly from Koushi Nakanishi, the Director of Resident Evil Requiem, during the recent Resident Evil Showcase. At one point in the video, when asked point-blank, 'So... is Leon really back?', Nakanishi replied, 'I never actually said he wouldn't appear. I never said that at all.' "This response prompted many fans to collectively roll their eyes and let out a skeptical 'Right...'. Because even though Nakanishi didn't explicitly state that Leon wouldn't have a role, it certainly felt like Capcom did everything in their power to make us believe exactly that."

For those who remember, when Resident Evil Requiem was first revealed, it was officially stated that Grace would be the new protagonist. Capcom even mentioned that they had initially considered Leon for the role but ultimately decided against it. Their reasoning was that players might not want to see Leon in a state of pure terror, as it didn't seem to fit the game's narrative."After Capcom made that statement, leakers doubled down, insisting that Leon would indeed appear—urging fans to 'just wait and see.' At the time, many people used Capcom’s own words to debunk those rumors. But now that Leon has been officially confirmed, those who staunchly believed Capcom's 'misdirection' are left feeling completely blindsided

Nakanishi-san clarified this point during the Resident Evil Showcase, explaining: 'Originally, the team intended to create a horror-focused game with Leon as the lead. However, we later decided he wasn't the right fit for that specific vibe. So, the horror elements were shifted to Grace's campaign, while Leon was given action-oriented gameplay in the style of Resident Evil 4."To put it in 'PR-speak': Nakanishi never explicitly said Leon wouldn't be in the game; he just said Leon wasn't a good fit for the horror side. So, they moved him to the action side instead. Talk about a masterclass in wordplay! He’s dodging questions with the finesse of a seasoned politician."

In fact, the only time Capcom and Nakanishi-san actually stepped in to issue a denial was regarding a specific AI-generated image of Leon wearing an eyepatch, which was rumored to be his official look in the game. Only then did they clarify, 'That is not the Leon from Resident Evil Requiem."Aside from that single instance, they never officially stated that Leon wouldn't be in the game. According to them, fans simply jumped to their own conclusions, and Capcom 'never communicated' anything of the sort. Reading this, you can’t help but roll your eyes—hard."
