The artist who drew the Attack on Titan manga revealed that he probably couldn't have written anything better than this

When speaking of legendary manga and anime series beloved by fans from Asia to America and across the globe, "Attack on Titan" (Shingeki no Kyojin) undoubtedly sits at the top of the list. However, before it became the modern legend it is today, the creator, Hajime Isayama, faced numerous rejections. He originally pitched his work to several famous manga magazines, only to be turned down for various reasons—ranging from his art style being "unpolished" to the premise of people living inside walls surrounded by giants being "uninteresting."

Eventually, one publisher saw the potential and took a chance on him. Once Attack on Titan began serialization, it gained immediate traction. But it was the anime adaptation that truly skyrocketed the series to global superstition. The impact was so profound that Isayama himself once remarked, "I don't think I'll ever be able to create a work better than this." Let’s dive into the journey of this masterpiece

This story comes from an interview with Isayama-sensei during a special screening of the movie "Attack on Titan: The Last Attack." Reflecting on his current life, he shared: "Since the manga ended and the final episode of the anime aired, I haven't picked up a pen to draw manga at all. Occasionally, I’m asked to do some illustrations or provide autographs, and I did contribute to Yuki Kaji's 'Soyogi Fractal' project (Breeze). However, drawing is no longer a part of my daily routine like it used to be."

Isayama-sensei further expressed: "Even so, I’m not exactly living the life I imagined for myself. I’m still busy with work every day. Although I'm not as busy as I was during the manga's serialization, and despite trying to come up with new ideas, I don't think I'll ever be able to write anything like Attack on Titan again. If I tried to write something new, it would likely end up as just a copy of elements I’ve already used in Attack on Titan. I feel that my first published work was exactly like that—a project where I poured in every single thing I had, until my head was completely empty and I had nothing left to write."

To be honest, what Isayama-sensei has achieved is the ultimate dream for every manga artist: creating a single legendary masterpiece and then being able to live off the royalties and attend special events without having to endure the back-breaking grind of the past. Many fans might remember that Isayama once mentioned his plan to retire from manga and open his own sauna (onsen). However, it seems he still hasn't found the time to make that dream a reality. The idea of pouring your entire soul into a work to the point where you feel you can never surpass it again is deeply relatable—because his work truly is that extraordinary.

If you’ve never seen it, you owe it to yourself to check it out. You’ll quickly understand why this manga and anime has captured the hearts of so many people around the globe
