Netflix will discontinue its service on PlayStation 3 in March this year

I bet more than half of the people reading this are thinking the exact same thing: "Wait, you can watch Netflix on a PlayStation 3?!" It’s a fair reaction. Most gamers move on to the latest consoles as they hit the market, leaving their older systems to gather dust in a box somewhere. However, there’s still a dedicated group of players who stick with their "retro" consoles for various reasons. So, it’s not surprising that many didn't even realize the PS3 supported Netflix in the first place.

Recently, Netflix sent out a notice to those still using the app on the legacy console, announcing: 'Netflix will discontinue its service on PlayStation 3 in March 2026.'

This has left many fans wondering, "What’s more shocking: the fact that Netflix was on the PS3 all along, or that they’re finally taking it away this March?" Let’s dive into the details.

The story originated from an X user named stuff about CRTs, who posted, "I just opened Netflix on my PS3 and saw that message </3." The screen on the PlayStation 3 displayed a notice saying: "Netflix will no longer be available on PlayStation 3 starting March 2026. Please check for a list of supported devices."

One of the comments pointed out, "Netflix is just using the excuse that the PS3 isn't powerful enough. In reality, the PS3's Cell processor is still incredibly high-performing even in 2026—they're just too lazy to maintain the system." This seems like a plausible theory, especially considering that Netflix was still releasing updates for the PlayStation 3 as recently as late 2025.

Another post from Instagram user spaceshiptiger shared a photo of a PlayStation 3 with the caption: "The Netflix app on PS3 is not only still updated and working perfectly, but it also works on 4:3 TVs with an optimized UI. Honestly, it even runs better than Sony’s own store, which barely functions at all."

Some users expressed a bit of shared sadness, with one commenting, "I think I’m one of about 10 people who are actually disappointed by this (lol)." Another added, "Netflix on PS3 is so convenient for watching old shows on a CRT in 4:3 without those annoying black bars on the sides. Glad I got to use it while it lasted—at least they gave us a heads-up (lol)."

It’s safe to say that Netflix is truly everywhere, on almost every entertainment system imaginable. Now, the Nintendo Switch remains the only major platform without a native Netflix app. While it would be amazing to have it, the likelihood seems slim. Even on the newly released Nintendo Switch 2, a YouTube app has yet to materialize (though it’s on the original Switch). Some speculate that Nintendo might be worried people would get too cozy watching Netflix on the Switch 2 and forget to actually buy and play games. Or, perhaps, there are some complex licensing agreements behind the scenes.

If there are any further updates, we’ll be sure to let you know. In the meantime, for those who still rely on the PlayStation 3 for your Netflix fix—you have our deepest sympathies
