Resident Evil 5 has been spotted on a game rating board. Could a Remake be on the way?

It has officially become a gaming urban legend. Rumors from Capcom insiders have been clashing for a while: one side claims that 'Resident Evil: Code Veronica Remake' is coming to satisfy long-time fans, while the other insists that 'Resident Evil 5 Remake' is next in line. With so much conflicting information, things have been a bit chaotic. However, on February 10th, eagle-eyed fans spotted a new listing for Resident Evil 5 on the ESRB (Entertainment Software Ratings Board) website. This latest discovery, combined with previous leaks, has many convinced that a Resident Evil 5 Remake might actually be the real deal this time

This story stems from the discovery of a new Resident Evil 5 rating for Xbox Series X/S on the Entertainment Software Ratings Board (ESRB) website. While the original Resident Evil 5 is already playable on these consoles via backward compatibility, a native version specifically for this generation has never existed.

Most of the rating details describe the mature content that earned the game its 'M' rating. However, a particularly interesting detail is the mention of 'In-Game Purchases.' While the original Resident Evil 5 did have DLC, the later 'Gold Edition' included all that content in the base game, making additional purchases unnecessary. In contrast, all of Capcom’s recent Resident Evil Remakes feature in-game purchases. This specific detail has led many to believe, beyond a doubt, that this rating is intended for the long-awaited Resident Evil 5 Remake.

All of this aligns with previous clues pointing toward a Resident Evil 5 Remake. For instance, Eva La Dare, the original motion capture actress for Sheva Alomar, recently teased something on X (formerly Twitter), stating: 'Got a few fun things lined up for March. Stay tuned!' She notably included the hashtag #ResidentEvil30thAnniversary, which immediately sent the fanbase into a frenzy.

With a PlayStation State of Play officially confirmed for February 12th, many are holding their breath, hoping for a surprise reveal of the Resident Evil 5 Remake. If the rumors hold true, there’s a high probability (at least according to fan speculation) that we might see a teaser this week, followed by a full reveal trailer in March to coincide with the franchise’s 30th-anniversary celebrations

To be fair, everything mentioned so far could just be wishful thinking from the Resident Evil community. We shouldn't forget that Resident Evil Requiem is set to launch at the end of this month—so why would Capcom announce a Resident Evil 5 Remake now and risk overshadowing its own new release?

While it could be a marketing strategy to keep the Resident Evil hype train rolling, Capcom also has other major titles like Pragmata and Onimusha that need their share of the spotlight. Would they really want their games competing for attention? This realization has many fans second-guessing themselves, wondering if the RE5 Remake is nothing more than a persistent rumor. For now, all we can do is wait and see what happens in the coming weeks
