Resident Evil Requiem preview reveals an infected Leon and the return of Sherry Birkin

For those following the gaming news last night, PlayStation’s State of Play featured several updates on upcoming titles. While the lineup was solid, it wasn't exactly 'mind-blowing,' as many of the reveals were somewhat predictable. However, among the few standouts was the latest—and likely final—trailer for Resident Evil Requiem. This trailer delivered a major bombshell by revealing that Leon is fighting an infection. It also shed light on the mysteries surrounding Grace and confirmed the long-standing fan theory: the returning character is indeed Sherry Birkin. Let’s dive into the details of this Resident Evil Requiem trailer and break down everything you need to know, point by point.

The trailer opens with Leon speaking to Sherry about the survivors of the Raccoon City incident—specifically, six individuals who all met the same mysterious end. It’s hinted that a specific type of infection might be responsible, leading Leon to investigate the root of the cause. His search leads him to Victor Gideon, a former Umbrella scientist conducting clandestine experiments in Rhodes Hill.

It is there that Leon encounters Grace, who was being held captive, and the two manage to escape together. As Leon pieces the puzzle together, he realizes that Grace holds a pivotal role in Gideon's research. Despite Sherry’s deep-dive into CIA and Pentagon databases, she finds absolutely no record of these activities, suggesting that Gideon’s work has remained a dark secret, hidden from the world for decades

Next, the trailer reveals a chilling shot of Leon’s hand, clearly infected by an unknown pathogen. All clues point back to Raccoon City, as we catch a glimpse of the iconic gas station where Leon first met Claire in Resident Evil 2, along with the famous 'Welcome' sign that fans know all too well.

The footage then takes us back to the Raccoon City Police Department (R.P.D.), returning to the very heart of the initial outbreak. Logically, the underground research facility was completely destroyed in the blast; however, it’s worth remembering that Umbrella had more than just one lab in the city. Alternatively, Gideon might have established a secret facility right under everyone’s noses—after all, a ghost town like Raccoon City is the perfect place to hide since no one would ever think to look there

Another intriguing point in the trailer involves Grace. We hear Gideon tell her, 'My master made you this way,' which leaves its true meaning up for debate. This has sparked a popular fan theory: Could Grace be an experimental subject rather than her mother's biological child? It’s possible she was taken in and raised after the fact.

We’ll have to wait for the game’s release to uncover the truth, but from what we’ve pieced together so far, Grace’s blood is the key to unlocking the mystery of this new virus. Exactly what that virus is and what it’s capable of remains one of the biggest question marks of the story

Turning our attention to the new gameplay footage, the trailer showcases Leon battling hordes of zombies amidst urban chaos, reminiscent of the large-scale intensity seen in Resident Evil 6. We also get a first look at a new type of enemy—zombies with enlarged, mutated heads that gain significant strength after reanimating from death.

Piecing all these clues together, many are speculating that Resident Evil Requiem will feature expansive environments for players to explore. While it likely won't be a full 'Open World,' the game seems to be moving toward large-scale sandbox areas rather than the traditional linear paths or the 'single-location backtracking' style we’ve seen in previous entries

For those eager to dive into the horror, get yourselves ready. Resident Evil Requiem is set to launch this February 27th on all current platforms. This entry is slated to be the final chapter of Leon S. Kennedy’s story, finally giving him the rest he deserves after years of constant struggle, before passing the torch to a new generation of characters.

See you in Raccoon City, survivors
