Tojima Tanzaburo Wants to be Kamen Rider Chapter 17: The Plan to Create the Shocker Army

Seventeen chapters have passed in the story of these 'chunnibyou' adults who dream of becoming Kamen Rider (or Masked Rider, or the classic 'Ai Mod Dang' as many of us know it) in the series Tojima Tanzaburo wa Kamen Rider ni Naritai (Tojima Tanzaburo Wants to be Kamen Rider).

In the previous chapters, Uncle Tojima and his crew faced a truly brutal opponent: the Bat Augment (Man-Bat). Unlike the Spider Augment, who had a shred of curiosity about humanity, this bat is pure cold-blooded ambition. He plans to establish a Shocker Army to conquer the world, using beautiful idols as bait to lure people into his trap.

Meanwhile, Uncle Tojima is grappling with a crisis of confidence. Feeling powerless after failing to stand his ground against the Bat Augment, he’s begun to waver, questioning the very path he’s chosen. Let’s dive in and see what exciting developments await us in Chapter 17 of Tojima Tanzaburo wa Kamen Rider ni Naritai.

The chapter opens with the story of idols and their fans. If you’ve never been a fan or part of the 'Ota' culture, you might find it baffling why so many men (and women) devote themselves to girls singing, dancing, and acting 'kawaii.' You might wonder why they’d spend money just for an 8-second handshake and a brief conversation, thinking that money could be better spent elsewhere.

However, it all comes down to personal preference. Take, for example, rare amulets worth millions; to some, they are just pressed clay in a frame that someone of another faith might throw away. Or consider spending money on alcohol and cigarettes—people know it’s bad for their health, yet they continue to consume it. Paying to hold an idol's hand, to be close to them, or to watch them perform is simply their source of happiness.

Don't devalue what others love just because you don't enjoy it yourself. Doing so makes you look foolish rather than superior

The scene shifts to Uncle Tojima, who is completely losing his composure. Having to flee from the previous battle has left a deep emotional scar; in his mind, a 'Kamen Rider' never runs away from an enemy, even if he did it to save his comrades.

While drowning in self-doubt, he sits down to watch the classic episode where Kamen Rider Nigo (No. 2) first appears. This becomes a moment of clarity for him. He realizes that there are some enemies even a Kamen Rider cannot defeat alone—but with allies, a Rider becomes truly unstoppable.

Up until now, Uncle Tojima has always fought a solitary battle; even in the most recent fight, his only instinct was to go it alone. Watching Nigo's debut finally makes him realize that to win this fight, he must stand shoulder-to-shoulder with his friends

The story shifts to the Bat Augment, who is utilizing his role as a manager and his ability to turn others into Shocker Soldiers (Geegies) through his bite. He is rapidly expanding his influence across the entertainment industry, ruthlessly biting everyone from directors to TV producers. By brainwashing these key players, he has catapulted his idol group to instant stardom.

The Bat Augment’s grand master plan is to have his idols perform at the Tokyo Dome—the ultimate milestone for any idol. His true intention, however, is to use this massive gathering to spread the Shocker infection worldwide. Since any soldier bitten by the Bat Augment can also infect others, a concert of this magnitude would be the perfect 'ground zero' for global domination

In the next chapter, the Spider Augment makes his return! What will happen next? Stay tuned to find out.
