Jeff The Land Shark from Marvel Rivals Joins Future MCU

It's called being in the right place at the right time with a character that has existed in the Marvel universe for a long time, but has yet to truly shine. Until the Marvel Rivals game development team used this character in the game. Jeff the Land Shark (dog), or his official Thai name is Jeff the Land Shark, the mischievous character immediately stole the scene. Jeff himself appeared in 2018 as a member of the West Coast Avengers team. He was so famous that he had several silent comic books (without text) and appeared with many heroes. However, he wasn't so famous that people who didn't read hero comics would know him. Until the Marvel Rivals game used this character, he became a hot topic to the point that high-ranking Marvel executives took interest in the character.

This confirmation story started from the success of the Marvel Rivals game. Even Marvel received positive feedback. Brad Winderbaum, Marvel's head of TV streaming and animation, gave an interview with the Phase Hero podcast, revealing that Marvel started to be interested in the character after he appeared in the Marvel Rivals game. People talked about where this hero character was in the Marvel universe. Even many senior executives at Marvel saw great potential in the character and that he might come to the Marvel Cinematic Universe or MCU in the future.

He also said that he is sure that Jeff, the land shark, will definitely be in the MCU, but Brad could not say when or where because it is under consideration. But he did hint that in Marvel What If...?, he might be introduced. Brad, head of TV, streaming and animation, said during the interview, "We are all huge fans of Jeff." Imagine if Marvel had their own little one like Pokémon had Pikachu, SEGA had Sonic, Disney had Stitch and the MCU had Jeff. How great would that be?

As for the background of this little shark, Jeff, he first appeared in the October 2018 issue of West Coast Avengers (vol. 3) #1, drawn and designed by Kelly Thompson and Stefano Caselli, which told the story of a school of sharks that suddenly ran up to create chaos on Santa Monica Beach. There was a land shark that was a cute extra in the scene. So, the artist Kelly took the character of this little shark and redrawn it to be one of the hero's pets, based on her cat's personality and named it Jeff. It first debuted in issue #7, drawn by Daniele DiNicuolo. According to the story, Gwen Poole was the one who raised and named it. After that, it was redesigned several times until it became the one we see now. When it appeared, it was very well received, so it got its own series of books and finally made it into the Marvel Rivals game.

It's called stealing the scene to the max because if anyone who's played Marvel Rivals and doesn't know this little guy must be wondering what this little guy is (including the writer). And when you pick him up to play, you'll fall in love with this little guy even more because he has cute expressions like we're seeing a puppy in shark form. So it's no surprise that he's so famous that he steals the scene from all the other hero characters in the game. For anyone interested in the Marvel Rivals game, it's free to play on both PC and consoles, plus on mobile, you can go meet little Jeff.
