Highest-grossing anime IPs of 2024

Finally, we have safely passed the year 2024, to the point that many people said to themselves, "Good job, I'll be your servant in 2025." And when we look back at the past year 2024, there were many interesting things in the anime industry. At the end of the year, various studios or websites will compile interesting statistics for us to read. One of them is the anime industry. In the past year 2024, the anime industry grew rapidly. This year, the anime industry broke records, generating huge incomes, and there were many famous IPs from anime that generated income from selling copyrights to make toys, collectibles, and many other things, including manga. Let's see which IPs are interesting.

Of course, the number 1 spot is none other than the anime that created both positive and negative trends, Jujutsu Kaisen, while the manga at that time was at its most fun part in the story, so it served as a driving force. Despite criticisms about the anime being rushed because it wasn't finished on time, and many other things, that didn't make the Jujutsu Kaisen IP lose popularity, selling 4,971,926,454 collectible toys from this anime (the data didn't say in yen or dollars). Followed by second place, which was stronger than many people thought, The Apothecary Diaries, with revenue of 4,580,904,330. Because it's fun and it's a detective story, plus unique characters, our apothecary IP unexpectedly jumped to second place.

But what's interesting about the income of this anime IP is the 7th and 8th place, which are considered dark horses that surprisingly overtook other famous anime. The 7th place is an anime that focuses on selling to girls or those who like BL like Touken Ranbu, an old Japanese anime that is full of handsome swordsmen. If you think that men or older otaku are the main market for anime IP, you'd be wrong. Because part of the driving force of anime these days comes (mostly) from the market of girls and those who like BL (at the past book fairs, the best-selling manga and novels at the event were BL). If there's an anime like Touken Ranbu, it's not strange that things related to this anime would sell like hotcakes.

Another surprising thing is the 8th place. To be honest, the anime manga Slam Dunk has ended for over 30 years. But because of the power of the old generation who yearned for the past, who used to run to the basketball court to play basketball like in the anime manga Slam Dunk, when the sequel film in 30 years, The First Slam Dunk, came out, everyone was eager to watch it. And according to the data, the sales of the Slam Dunk anime IP that jumped this much came from the sales of Blu-ray discs that many people wanted to collect, including various products that were made for sale. Therefore, the anime that had been quiet for 30 years returned to selling well in 2024 again.

And another surprising thing is that in this top 30, there is no Kimetsu no Yaiba anime, even though last year there was a sequel, The Hashira's Teaching Arc, which aired. But the trend was so quiet that the IP didn't make it into the top 30 because the story was too long and unimportant that it could have ended in 2 episodes normally, but it was extended to many episodes, so the trend wasn't as great as expected. As for 2025, we'll have to wait and see which IP will surpass the 1st to 3rd place. We'll have to wait and see. If we reach the end of 2025, we'll definitely talk about this again. Stay tuned.
