It has become a topic that must be talked about and inevitably compared with 2 Hero Shooter games, Overwatch 2 and Marvel Rivals, two games that have similar gameplay and many things. But many people who play both games say the same thing, that both games have similar gameplay only on the outside, but the gameplay, emotions, controls, and other things are clearly different. And there is almost nothing similar as many people think. But in the end, many people in the gaming industry, including the media, inevitably compare these 2 games. And recently, someone went to look at the statistics of Overwatch 2 players on SteamDB and found that since Marvel Rivals was launched late last year, Overwatch 2 players have decreased by almost 40%.
According to SteamDB, Overwatch 2 had a peak concurrent player count of 34,813 between September 5 and October 4 for the three months leading up to Marvel Rivals' launch, and 34,107 between October 5 and November 4. By November 5 and December 4, the concurrent player count had peaked at 32,268. However, when Marvel Rivals launched, the concurrent player count had dropped to 20,565, a massive 39 percent decrease. Note that this is only on PC and Steam, so it's not a fair measure of Overwatch 2's drop because of Marvel Rivals, but it's easy to assume that many players from Overwatch 2 and other online games are switching to Marvel Rivals.
And the latest (as of the time of writing this article), the number of players of Overwatch 2 on SteamDB is 15,031. The game's peak in 24 hours was 24,483, and its peak player count over the past 17 months was 75,608. Meanwhile, the game Marvel Rivals currently has 236,887 players, its peak in 24 hours was 386,270, and its peak player count over the past 20 days was 644,269. Just the current player count is a difference of 221,856 players.
At this point, many people who have played and are fans of Overwatch 2 are worried and say in unison that Overwatch 2 needs to hurry up and do something. If it continues to do nothing like this, Marvel Rivals will definitely steal all of its players. It’s not just Overwatch 2, but other online games as well that are likely to be feeling the heat from this number. However, those who are true Overwatch fans say differently that Overwatch has already gone through its worst period. For example, when the popularity of the first Overwatch game dropped. At that time, Overwatch wasn’t on Steam yet and it was a paid game. For consoles, you had to top up your PSN to play online. Overwatch was still alive and had maintained its player base. Therefore, the arrival of Marvel Rivals is not something to worry about in the minds of Overwatch fans.
At this point, even though we said that Overwatch had gone through a bad period and didn't really feel anything, don't forget that Overwatch 2 has now changed to a free game that focuses on selling in-game items, unlike the past when it was a game that you had to buy outright without paying extra (you had to pay extra to buy boxes to open). It's like putting pressure on yourself when the number of players drops because there are games with similar formats that appear. Plus, the game did surprisingly well, so many people want Overwatch 2 to do something to bring players back. Right now, there's nothing obvious, but Overwatch 2 fans think that the developers must have a secret weapon to entice players to come back. We'll have to wait and see. If there's any progress, we'll rush to report it.
