Russia announces domestic production of game consoles

To be honest, when I saw the source of this news, I thought it was a funny joke that foreigners made news to mock the big bear country of Russia. We all know that the big country of Russia is currently in a tense war that has been dragging on for years with Ukraine, and there is still no conclusion on where it will end. But then there was news that Russia was thinking of creating its own game console for people in the country to play. When everyone saw this news, everyone thought it was funny because at a time like this, who would be crazy enough to make a game console for people in the country to play? But when I looked up the information, I had to exclaim in Russian because it was true.

It must be said first that the news of the creation of a new game console in Russia is not new news that has just been talked about. This news has been talked about since March 2024 that Russia is interested in developing a game console that can be played domestically. The summary of the content says that "The Russian government has received an order from President Vladimir Putin to examine the feasibility of developing several domestic consoles. These devices are likely to compete with PlayStation and Xbox in the Russian market. President Putin has approved a list of 9 orders, which will be implemented after chairing a conference on the economic and social development of the Kaliningrad region in late January (but officially announced in March 2024), including the development of a whole digital entertainment platform, which is very similar to what Valve has been producing for many years."

And most recently, on December 25, Russia posted a blog on its Habr website, confirming that Russia is developing a console using the Elbrus processor, which is admittedly less powerful than the Xbox and PlayStation consoles, but will be a cloud-based console using cheap hardware for consumers, according to RBC. The gist of the content is that the first Russian game console is designed on the Elbrus processor and other domestic components. Anton Gorelkin, Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Information Policy Committee, revealed details about the progress of the development of the Russian game console. At the moment, the Ministry of Industry and Trade has not yet decided whether to choose Aurora or Alt Linux, but plans to come up with a concept to compete in the console market in the future. Gorelkin said, "I hope that my colleagues will take this work seriously and create something truly progressive. Everything is still in development to ensure equal competition with the PlayStation 5 and Xbox. And it will not be a console that ports hundreds of old games, as many people think, but a new game console, implemented by the presidential decree. The platform will serve the main purpose of promoting and distributing domestic video games in order to expand the audience beyond PC and mobile games," Gorelkin said. (Apologies if the translation is wrong, I'm not good at Russian.)

One of the reasons why Russia wants to create its own games is because of the sanctions from other countries, which makes it impossible to buy or import games. Meanwhile, there are many Russian game developers, so they should be able to ask for cooperation (force) to make games for this new console. Of course, when this news was released, gamers all over the world laughed and felt sorry for the ordinary people of Russia who had to go through something like this. We will have to wait and see what Russia's new console will be like. If there is any progress, we will rush to report it to you immediately.
