Out of the blue, news regarding the God of War live-action series has surfaced. As many already know, Amazon has acquired the rights to adapt the game for Prime Video. They’ve announced that the series will focus on the 2018 storyline rather than the original Greek era, which has sparked mixed reactions. While many fans are disappointed by this decision, others agree with the move, citing that the newer narrative offers more depth compared to the gore-focused original games. Furthermore, Prime Video has reportedly revealed Ryan Hurst—well known as the masked 'Beta' from The Walking Dead—as the actor who will portray Kratos
For those unfamiliar with Ryan Hurst, he boasts an extensive filmography ranging from Saving Private Ryan to CSI: Miami, as well as a prominent role in the later seasons of The Walking Dead. Within the gaming world, Hurst provided the hauntingly deep voice for Thor in God of War Ragnarök, making him a fitting choice for this role. Meanwhile, some users on X have pointed out that Kratos isn't Black. However, historical records of ancient Spartans describe them as having olive skin rather than being Black. The reason Kratos appears ghostly white is due to a curse that bonded the ashes of his dead wife and daughter to his skin
As for the direction, the series will be helmed by Ronald D. Moore, the acclaimed creator behind Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, and For All Mankind. To provide some background before the live-action series begins, the original God of War story follows Kratos, a fierce Spartan warrior who made a desperate pact with Ares, the God of War, in his final moments of life. Kratos became Ares' pawn in various wars, but in a bid to create the ultimate warrior, Ares tricked Kratos into murdering his own wife and daughter. Once Kratos regained his senses, he embarked on a vengeful crusade to slaughter the gods, a path of destruction that eventually led to the downfall of the entire Greek pantheon
The series will adapt the later chapter of Kratos' life, long after his vengeful past. Now older, Kratos has started over in a new land with a wife and a son named Atreus. Unlike his father, Atreus is small in stature, gentle, and was very close to his mother. Following her passing, the estranged father and son must fulfill her final wish: to scatter her ashes from the highest peak in the realm. Just as they set out, a mysterious god appears, threatening Atreus’s life. Their journey begins not only as a pilgrimage but as a struggle for survival, with deep-seated secrets waiting to be unraveled. This is the story the live-action series will bring to life
Now, we’ll have to wait and see who will be cast as Atreus—or as Kratos calls him throughout the game, 'Boy' (he rarely uses his son’s actual name). Deep down, Kratos struggles with his son’s perceived weakness. However, weighed down by his wife’s final wish, the grief of losing his love, and the exhaustion of his advancing age, Kratos’ perspective on combat begins to shift. Having to protect and guide his son on this journey makes for an incredibly heart-wrenching and compelling story. Rest assured, if there are any further updates on the God of War series, we’ll be sure to report them. Stay tuned
