Anime Recommendation: The Bamboo Cutter Princess in the Metaverse "A fluffy, heartwarming journey through a digital dreamscape

The Japanese anime industry lately seems to be a world of extremes: it’s either a top-tier masterpiece or a total flop that leaves fans venting their frustrations. Currently, we are being spoiled with high-quality hits that have everyone talking, from the return of Oshi no Ko Season 3 and Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3 to the breathtaking Frieren: Beyond Journey's End Season 2, which continues to receive non-stop praise. Amidst this wave of heavy hitters, Netflix just dropped a new anime feature titled "Cosmic Princess Kaguya" (The Bamboo Cutter Princess in the Metaverse). Released on January 22nd, this two-hour movie is, in a word, spectacular. From its compelling storytelling to the stunning in-game graphics, it is an absolute visual treat. It’s so good that I just had to share it with you. Let’s dive in and see what makes Cosmic Princess Kaguya a must-watch!

Let’s start with a brief overview of the story. The movie is set in the near future, where a revolutionary Metaverse game allows players to live, play, and engage in various activities in a virtual world. The story follows Iroha, a high school girl who seems "perfect" in every way—shining in academics, sports, and music. Despite her success, she chooses to live independently, away from her family. One evening, while walking home from her part-time job, Iroha encounters something unbelievable: a baby hidden inside a utility pole (yes, you read that correctly!). Shocked and confused, Iroha decides to take the baby home. In a matter of days, the infant miraculously grows until she is the same age as Iroha. Claiming to be from the Moon, the mysterious girl is named "Kaguya" by Iroha.

The two soon dive into the Metaverse together, embarking on a journey to become virtual idols. As they navigate the digital world, a deep bond of friendship forms between them. Their goal? To reach the happy ending Kaguya has always dreamed of. How will their journey unfold, and what secrets lie behind Kaguya's lunar origins? You'll have to watch and find out!

If the synopsis sounds familiar, that’s because the story is a clever reimagining of the "Tale of the Bamboo Cutter." In the original Japanese folklore, Princess Kaguya is born from a glowing bamboo stalk and is ultimately forced to leave her loved ones behind to return to the Moon. However, our Kaguya in this film has other plans. After hearing the original sad ending, she boldly declares, "I will create a happier ending than just returning to the Moon." How she plans to rewrite her destiny is something you'll have to see for yourself. But before you do, let's break the movie down into its three main acts:

Part 1: The Encounter. This segment focuses on the "real world." We follow Iroha’s chaotic yet charming daily life as she discovers the baby and adjusts to living with a girl who grows up almost overnight. Part 2: The Metaverse Journey. The tone shifts into high gear as the duo enters the virtual world. Expect dazzling action sequences and fierce competitions as they battle their way to the top of the virtual idol rankings. Part 3: The Lunar Reunion. The climax begins when the inhabitants of the Moon arrive to take Kaguya back.

I can honestly say that watching this was a pure delight. Between the infectious soundtrack, the compelling narrative, and the top-tier animation, the quality is truly on another level.

If you ask what the ultimate selling point of this two-hour feature is, I can answer without a second thought: it’s the visuals. The character animation is fluid, and the facial expressions are so expressive they’re practically "meme-tier." But the real magic happens when they enter the Metaverse. The graphics shift into something absolutely mind-blowing—spectacular doesn't even begin to cover it. The art direction is top-notch, complemented by a soundtrack that is incredibly catchy. For those watching the Thai dub (which is how I experienced it), you’re in for a real treat. Some of the songs have been adapted into Thai, and they are absolutely sublime. The voice acting is stellar; every actor embodies their character perfectly, making the experience just as enjoyable as the original Japanese audio.

I initially worried that two hours might feel a bit long, but once I started watching, the time flew by much faster than I expected!

As for the downsides, the main issue lies in the storyline. While it feels fresh and intriguing at first, seasoned fans of the "Isekai" or Metaverse genres might find it a bit cliché. You might not feel that "wow" factor from the plot itself, as the real amazement is heavily carried by the visuals and graphics instead.Furthermore, knowing from the start that Kaguya is from the Moon makes the ending fairly predictable. This is a double-edged sword. On one hand, it’s a flaw because you can see exactly where the story is headed. On the other hand, it could be a deliberate "trap" set by the creators to subvert our expectations—who knows? (I’m not telling; you’ll have to see for yourself!)

So, while you could argue that the plot is a weak point, I’d say it’s "okay" at best. I can’t quite give it a full-throated recommendation for its storytelling alone, but it still holds its own

To wrap it up, The Bamboo Cutter Princess in the Metaverse is a high-quality anime that definitely deserves a spot on your watchlist. The story flows smoothly, and even though it follows a somewhat "standard formula," the charming characters and the creative setting keep you hooked until the very end. My Score: 8.5 / 10 The Highlights: The Thai dub is phenomenal—I absolutely loved it (especially the localized regional accents!). The visuals are gorgeous, packed with meme-worthy character expressions and explosive Metaverse graphics. The Catch: The plot is a bit predictable and sticks strictly to the classic formula.

It delivers that pure "fluffy" vibe typical of the "Cute Girls Doing Cute Things" genre that so many fans adore. However, if you’re looking for something dark, gritty, or violent, this isn’t the show for you. For everyone else, head over to Netflix right now and experience for yourself what a "fluffy Metaverse anime" truly feels like!
