When it comes to the earless blue robot cat, Doraemon, we immediately think of the legendary creator Fujiko F. Fujio, who crafted this timeless masterpiece enjoyed by generations—from our parents' time until today. Doraemon originally started as a short comic for elementary school students before skyrocketing to fame once the chapters were compiled into volumes.
However, few people know the true origin of the details we take for granted. Why does Doraemon love Dorayaki? What are the specifics of his height and waistline? Why is he terrified of mice? And how exactly did he turn from yellow to blue? All of these iconic traits actually came from the mind of Yoji Katakura, the man behind the scenes whom Fujiko F. Fujio trusted to expand and build this universe. Let’s dive into his story.
This story is based on a video from the CLOUDSPHERE channel, which highlights the life of Yoji Katakura, a highly skilled assistant who worked under Fujiko F. Fujio. Back then, before the Doraemon series became a global phenomenon, everything was business as usual. However, once the compiled manga volumes became a massive hit, children from all over Japan began flooding Fujiko F. Fujio with endless questions.
The letters were filled with curiosity: 'What is Doraemon's exact birth date?' 'Why does he love eating Dorayaki?' 'Why is he blue?' 'Since he's a cat, why doesn't he walk on all fours?' and even 'Doraemon doesn't wear shoes—doesn't he get the floor dirty when he walks into the house?' There were so many questions that it was impossible to answer them all. Overwhelmed with his workload, Fujiko F. Fujio entrusted these details to Yoji Katakura. It was Katakura who then took it upon himself to build and codify the Doraemon universe as we know it today
Master Katakura collected all those questions from the children and drew the answers in children's magazines of that era, with Master Fujiko F. Fujio personally approving every detail. This means that everything Katakura illustrated back then became the 'official' lore of Doraemon. Now, let’s go through the questions many people are curious about—starting with the ones Katakura already answered.
First: 'What is Doraemon's exact birth date?' For this, Katakura actually asked Fujiko F. Fujio, but even the creator couldn't decide. Eventually, an assistant suggested September 3rd, and Fujiko F. Fujio went with it. As for the birth year, it was derived from Doraemon’s height. When children asked how tall Doraemon was, Katakura used the average height of children at that time as a reference. He then applied those same numbers to his birth year, waistline, and even how high he jumps when he encounters a mouse!
Next, 'Why does Doraemon love eating Dorayaki?' Katakura explained that Dorayaki contains nutrients that are more easily converted into energy compared to other foods.
'Why is Doraemon blue?' According to Katakura, after Doraemon lost his ears because a robotic mouse gnawed them off, the originally yellow robot cat looked into a mirror. He was so traumatized and shocked by his earless reflection that he turned pale with fright, causing his yellow paint to fade into blue.
'Why doesn't Doraemon walk on all fours like a cat?' The answer is simple: if he walked on all fours, he wouldn't be able to use his hands to reach for his secret gadgets!
Finally, 'Doraemon doesn't wear shoes—doesn't he get the floor dirty when he walks inside?' This is because his feet never actually touch the ground; they hover slightly above it. Additionally, his body is made of a special type of metal that naturally repels dust and dirt
Furthermore, Master Katakura was the one who drew 'Handsome Mon' (the well-proportioned version of Doraemon). While the anime production team adopted many of Katakura's ideas, they also modified some—such as the specific reasons for his love of Dorayaki or the mouse incident—to make them more logical for the screen.

However, many of Katakura’s original concepts remain canon in the anime today. This includes the origin of the sibling bond between Doraemon and Dorami, who are considered siblings because they were both activated using oil from the same can. This also includes the story of Dorami’s ears; she voluntarily chose not to have cat ears because she didn't want Doraemon to feel insecure or develop a complex about his own missing ears There is so much more to discover!
