Kamen Rider Zeztz Episode 17: CODE Number 4, a new person appears

 

We have now reached Episode 17 of Kamen Rider Zeztz (or Mask Rider Zeztz), the story of a secret agent protecting people's dreams. In the previous episode, we followed the story of a nurse who cared for Nemu-chan on the night she disappeared. This nurse was a devoted fan who loved Nemu-chan and wanted to protect her from nightmares. However, the Nightmares reinterpreted that dream: they believed that 'protecting' Nemu meant consuming her to keep her inside their own bodies, preventing anyone else from taking her away (as Nightmares interpret the dreamer's intentions in an opposite or distorted way).

In the last episode, Zero fought Nox, who had gained a new power, and suffered a total defeat. Meanwhile, Nemu-chan was swallowed by the Werewolf Nightmare. Let’s see what interesting information and developments await us in Kamen Rider Zeztz Episode 17

This episode continues from the previous one, focusing on Nox’s goal to destroy the secret organization. In the last episode, Nox lured Zero out in order to steal the Core Crystal containing Zero's system data. This was done so that Lady, the villain pulling the strings, could analyze the memory logs and track down Zero’s true identity

Based on Nox’s dialogue, it appears that no one actually knows who Zero or the organization really are. The CODEs (the secret agents) simply receive missions from a mysterious robot called Sero. Furthermore, if any CODE becomes useless or unnecessary, the organization discards them—exactly what happened to Nox. Sero didn't bother to deny or explain the decision to abandon Nox back then, leaving us in doubt as to whether Zero and the organization are actually the 'good guys' or the 'villains' after all

The more we watch Kamen Rider Zeztz, the more we see the unsettling inconsistencies within the organization. While they appear to be 'the good guys,' their actions suggest otherwise. They use the power of Nightmares to fuel their transformations and push their agents to the limit, regardless of their capability or willingness. This includes threatening Baku’s younger sister with the truth and callously discarding agents who are no longer useful.

It raises a compelling theory: could Nox, the villain Baku is fighting, actually be on the right side? Meanwhile, Zero—the side Baku has been helping all along—might be the true antagonist masquerading as a hero. It feels like we might be rooting for the wrong side (this is just a guess)

It seems Baku might suspect this as well, but he chooses to play along with the organization for now. He knows that being defiant could lead to him being 'silenced' or cut off before he can get close enough to uncover the truth. In a way, 'going with the flow' is just another essential skill of a secret agent. This could very well be his long game

Next is the confrontation between Nox and Zeztz. In that moment, it appeared that Nox had no intention of actually harming Zeztz (Baku). He even left him with a chilling warning: 'In the end, your determination will lead to a great disaster.' If I had to guess, this likely refers to Baku's efforts in aiding an organization that might actually be evil; ultimately, Baku himself might be the one who turns the nightmare into reality. Towards the end of the episode, Nox killed the Werewolf Nightmare to obtain the Dream Butterflies. It seems these butterflies are the essential raw material for creating transformation powers. With Nemu-chan acting as a 'refinery' that converts dead Nightmares into these butterflies, she has become vital to Nox and Lady's grand plan. We’ll have to wait and see how this unfolds

On top of that, a new character has emerged: CODE 4, who appeared in place of the Sero robot. This newcomer seems to be the replacement for Nox, who also previously held the CODE 4 rank. We must keep an eye on what role this character will play in the future
