No. 1 Sentai Gozyuger Episode 45: What is the purpose of being a leader?

We have finally reached Episode 45 of the ring-hunting team, No. 1 Sentai Gozyuger. This serves as the final series before a long 10-year hiatus, following an incredible 50-year non-stop run. As we know, the longer a franchise runs, the more it struggles with creative exhaustion, eventually falling into a repetitive loop of dinosaurs, vehicles, and animals, while constantly relying on legacy cameos. No. 1 Sentai Gozyuger Episode 45 is a prime example of this mess, where the plot has become so incoherent that it’s lost its charm. Let’s take a look at what—if anything—is actually interesting in this episode

The story picks up right where it left off. Vidal of Hunger, an overwhelmingly powerful villain, makes his entrance and utterly crushes the Gozyugers—even their 'strength in numbers' tactic couldn't save them. After the team flees for their lives, Vidal... just goes home. It’s like he showed up purely to beat them up and nothing else. Meanwhile, despite being beaten to within an inch of their lives, the Gozyugers' next brilliant move isn't to strategize, but to dress up as ghosts to trick Sasuke into giving them a ring. (Seriously, zero stress, zero stakes). We learn that Sasuke is only there because Origa Red invited him to witness the 'legitimacy' of his Red Ranger status. To top it off, the show claims Sasuke has been on a continuous journey ever since the end of Kakuranger

The core theme of this episode revolves around the 'burden of leadership' expected of a Red Ranger. Sasuke reflects on his own experience, noting that while he wore red, it was actually Tsuruhime (Ninja White) who led the Kakurangers, as she was the one who assembled the team. This conversation serves as a direct critique of Hoeru, who is currently struggling with his self-worth as a leader. Sasuke’s advice is simple: he doesn't need to force himself into a traditional leadership mold; being himself is enough. This sentiment is echoed when Origa Red questions Tekasort about why Hoeru was chosen as the Red Ranger in the first place, to which Tekasort cryptically responds that Origa Red will eventually find out for himself

The scene cuts to the villain reappearing. This time, Origa Red attempts a 1-on-1 duel but gets utterly crushed. Right before the finishing blow, Hoeru leaps in to shield Origa Red from Vidal of Hunger’s blast, collapsing right in front of him. And what are Hoeru’s profound words? 'I’m hungry.' Apparently, he didn't collapse from the blast, but because he missed lunch. He claims he jumped in because of his instinct to protect a comrade—the 'noble' sacrifice a Red leader should make. (Are you kidding me!??) Then, the rest of the Gozyugers show up with food, Hoeru eats, and suddenly he's back in the fight. (How did a human-form Hoeru survive a blast from Vidal anyway?) To top it all off, Hoeru activates his Ultimate Form and defeats Vidal with zero effort. (Then why on earth didn't you use this form from the start?!)

The main plot and the discovery of the final ring conclude here, while Fire Candle takes Vidal of Hunger’s body to further their future schemes. In the next episode, the Gozyugers will be forced to fight among themselves to claim all the rings. We’ll have to wait and see how this internal conflict unfolds
